According to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader’s dramedy The Skeleton Twins rocketed up the domestic box office chart in its third weekend, even with another flood of specialty film debuts. The movie placed No. 11 as it successfully expanded from 49 to 385 theaters. The critically acclaimed movie, directed by Craig Johnson, took in a strong $1.3 million for a cume of $2.4 million (last weekend, it placed No. 19).
“A big part of the film’s success is due to the fact that Bill and Kristen, as well as Luke and Ty, gave big support on the PR front. They did literally 20 or more talk show appearances between them, in addition to a ton of regional and online press,” said Roadside co-president Howard Cohen, adding that great reviews are likewise motivating people. Roadside said the feature had only a 25-percent drop in same theaters compared to the previous week. The Skeleton Twins, posting a theater average of $3,278, will continue expanding in the coming weeks.
Again, huge congrats to the team behind the film for their well-deserved success!
The critically acclaimed and crowd-pleasing film The Skeleton Twins is released in theaters nationwide this weekend! The movie tells the story of estranged twins Maggie and Milo, who both coincidentally cheated death on the same day, then reunite with the possibility of mending their relationship. Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader plays the twins, with Ty Burrell and Luke Wilson in supporting roles. The Skeleton Twins premiered to fantastic reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and has continued the success in limited release for the past two weeks. It’s now available in 75 markets and 375 theaters, so be sure to go see it this weekend!
To promote the release, Kristen and Bill have appeared on several talk shows. Yesterday they were interviewed in a hilarious clip where the reporter hadn’t seen The Skeleton Twins and confused the film with another Wiig-movie (Welcome to Me) and their reaction is great. Be sure to watch the new videos in our archive!
Great news; Kristen Wiig is featured on one of the covers of W magazine’s October issue! The feature, called The New Royals, also include covers with Naomi Campbell, Cara Delevingne, Charlotte Casiraghi and Ellen Page. Congrats to Wiig for being featured on the cover! We have added the scans from the magazine to our photo gallery. Simply click on the previews below to see them in high resolution.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Zurich International Film Festival has completed its lineup for its 10th edition, with the few last-minute editions to its schedule, including Craig Johnson’s Sundance-winning drama The Skeleton Twins, starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. The film festival, held in the Swiss city of Zurich, runs from Sept. 25 to Oct. 5. No word yet on whether any of the film’s stars will be in attendance, but if Kristen does appear we will be sure to report it.
As mentioned in the previous post, Kristen Wiig appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today – and what an appearance it was! They talked about her latest film, The Skeleton Twins, the possibility of a Bridesmaids sequel (sorry, never going to happen) and they sang a… well, quite terrible (in the best possible way!) rendition of “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen. Watch the hilarious clips below, and stay tuned for more!
Later today, Kristen Wiig will make her debut on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote The Skeleton Twins (in select theaters now!). Judging by the preview, available here, they will be doing some singing together (improvised?) as well as the interview. As a fan of Ellen’s show, I’m very happy to see K-Wiig finally be able to make an appearance. Check back later for coverage from the show!
According to The Wrap, Kristen Wiig’s latest film, Sundance Film Festival award-winner The Skeleton Twins, got off to a fast start at the specialty box office this weekend. The drama starring Bill Hader and Wiig as long-estranged and troubled twins reuniting and putting each others’ lives back on track took in almost $411,000 from 15 theaters for a strong $27,383 per-theater average for Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate. That was easily the best of any film released this weekend. The film, directed and co-written by Craig Johnson, played in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
The two stars, along with co-stars Luke Wilson and Ty Burrell, have been energetically promoting the film, which has an impressive 89 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Skeleton Twins won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting award at this past Sundance Film Festival, where Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate acquired the film. A Roadside spokesman said Sunday that The Skeleton Twins will open in the balance of the top ten markets next weekend, in advance of a nationwide release on September 26. Big congrats are in order to the entire cast and crew for the early success!
